Follow the steps under the heading that applies to you. Before You Install 1. Choose Control Panels from the Apple menu. 2. Double-click the Extensions Manager control panel to open it. 3. In the Extensions list, make sure there is a check mark next to Desktop Printer Extension, Desktop Printer Spooler, and Desktop Printer Menu (if Desktop Printer Menu is installed). 4. Close the Extensions Manager control panel and restart your computer. Now you can install the Color StyleWriter 6000 Series printer software. If You Have Already Installed Follow the steps above and in step 3, make sure there is also a check mark next to CSW 6000 Series in the Extensions Manager. Problems Printing From 660AV and 840AV Computers If you have problems printing from a Macintosh Quadra 660AV or 840AV, find the SerialDMA v 2.0.2 file located on Disk 2 (if you are using floppy disks) or in the Printer Software folder on the Apple Printer Software Collection CD. Drag the SerialDMA v 2.0.2 file into the Extensions folder located in your System Folder and restart. Problems are most likely to be encountered with Systems 7.1 or 7.1.1. Upgrading to System 7.5.3 or greater will also fix the printing problems. Be sure to read the Read Me file in the SerialDMA folder for more information. Network Printing * If while printing your document, multiple blank pages are ejected, turn off the printer and turn it back on again. * If you see the Power light and Resume light blinking alternately, turn off the printer and turn it back on again. If You Don't See a Desktop Printer Icon If you do not see a desktop printer icon on your desktop after you have selected the 6000 Series printer icon in the Chooser, you may need to enable desktop printing. To enable desktop printing, follow these steps: 1. Choose Control Panels from the Apple menu. 2. Double-click the Extensions Manager control panel to open it. 3. In the Extensions list, make sure there is a check mark next to Desktop Printer Extension, Desktop Printer Spooler, Desktop Printer Menu (if Desktop Printer Menu is installed), and Desktop PrintMonitor. 4. Check and make sure there is also a check mark next to CSW 6000 Series. 5. Close the Extensions Manager control panel and restart your computer. . Low-Memory Troubleshooting If you notice any of these symptoms, your Macintosh may be running out of memory: - The Macintosh displays "out of memory" warning messages. - Some portions of a document don't print. - Printing is very slow. To make more memory available, try these suggestions: * Have only one application open at a time. * Increase the amount of memory you give to the application you're printing from by using the Get Info command (as explained in the documentation that came with your Macintosh). * In the Background panel in the Print dialog box , select foreground printing, as explained in Chapter 2 of the user manual. * Choose Normal in the Quality/Paper Type panel of the Print dialog. * In the Page Setup dialog box, choose Portrait orientation instead of Landscape orientation. (You may also have to change the layout of the document.) * Remove any watermarks from your document. If your document uses the Watermark feature, turn off the watermark by going to the Watermark panel of the Page Setup dialog box and choosing None from the Watermark pop-up menu. * Desktop printing requires more memory than PrintMonitor 7.1.3. You can remove desktop printing. Open the Printing Software installer that came with your printer. Choose Custom Remove and select "Desktop Printing Software." * If you often get a message that there is not enough memory to print on a certain desktop printer, you can give that desktop printer more memory by selecting its icon and choosing the Get Info command. Then increase the number in the Preferred Size box. * Use the Memory control panel to turn on virtual memory, as explained in the documentation that came with your Macintosh. Color Printing * For best color output, print with ColorSync on. * In some applications, colors on the screen may look solid but contain tiny black dots when printed. To print solid blocks of color without these black dots, use the Business Graphics color-matching method. Choose Print and in the Print dialog box, choose the Color panel from the panel pop-up menu. In the Color panel, make sure there is an X in the ColorSync box. Then select Business Graphics from the Matching Method pop-up menu. If your colors still have too many black dots, create the document in a application that allows you to define each color, then make the color fully saturated. For example, to print yellow without any black dots in it, use your application to define the yellow you are using as 100% red, 100% green, and 0% blue. Other Printing Tips * If you see random fine lines in the image when printing in landscape, try rotating the image 90 degrees and select portrait orientation in Page Setup. * When printing envelopes, use a pre-printed label for the return address. The printer's paper feed mechanism requires a large left margin so the return address may be only partially printed or may print farther from the left edge of the envelope than is customary. * Images saved as encapsulated PostScript(TM) (EPS) may appear jagged on all non-PostScript printers. For best results, substitute a TIFF or PICT version of the image. * Close the Chooser after making any changes to it. * If you are experiencing slow printing on an 8 MB PowerBook 5300 with virtual memory on, try upgrading to System 7.6. * If you are connected to an AppleTalk network, you must disconnect the AppleTalk connection from the back of the printer to print a test page. * Be sure to load paper according to the instructions in the user manual. If the paper is not properly loaded, the printed image may be skewed on the page. * If you see the following message while running the installer, "Installation on the active startup disk cannot take place while another application is running. Please quit "HP Background" and try again." follow these steps. 1. Quit the Installer. 2. In the System folder open the Extensions folder. Find the HP Background file and drag it to your hard disk. 3. Restart your computer. 4. Run the Installer. Once the installation is completed put the HP Background file back into your Extensions folder and restart your computer. Watermarks * When using a watermark, make sure any font used in the watermark file is also in the Fonts folder inside your System Folder. If you give the watermark file to someone, that person also needs any fonts that it uses in order to use the watermark. * If you are printing a diagonal watermark such as Draft or Final on A4 or Legal size paper, for best results use Centered or Align Top Left orientations. Installation on Localized Systems or Language Kits * If no desktop printer icons appear after you follow the instructions in Chapter 2 of the user manual, it may mean the Installer program installed PrintMonitor 7.1.3 instead of the desktop printing software. This can happen if you are running system software version 7.5 or earlier in a language other than English. You have three choices: - Use the PrintMonitor 7.1.3 that was installed. - Upgrade to System 7.5.1, and then install the Color StyleWriter 6000 Series printer software again. - Use the Installer program's Custom Install feature to install the desktop printing software. This option, however, also installs an English-language version of the Finder. * Color StyleWriter 6000 series printing software can be installed onto localized systems and systems with language kits. However, when installing onto localized systems, the Color StyleWriter 6000 series installer will not replace the localized version of certain system files. Having more than one copy of these files may cause serious problems. Please follow the steps below to remove the extra files from your current system folder: 1. In the Apple Menu folder (this name will be translated into the native language of your localized system) please locate the localized version of Chooser and drag it into the trash. 2. In the Extensions folder (this name will be translated also), please locate the localized equivalents of the following: - Desktop PrintMonitor - Desktop Printer Spooler - Desktop Printer Extension - Desktop Printer Menu (this may or may not exist) Drag these files into the trash. 3. Also in the Extensions folder, please locate the localized equivalent of PrintMonitor and drag it into the trash. 4. In the Preferences folder (this name will be translated also), please find the "ColorSync Profiles" folder and its localized equivalent. Drag the contents in the localized profiles folder into the "ColorSync Profiles" folder. Restart your computer and empty trash afterwards. 5. In the Preferences folder, please find the "Printing Prefs" folder and its localized equivalent. If you would like to continue to use the watermarks residing in the localized Printing Prefs folder, please make a copy of these files and drag them into the "Printing Prefs" folder. * If you have a system with language kits installed, when you click the radio buttons and check boxes, or typing in the page/copy number fields in the Color StyleWriter 6000 series Page Setup and Print dialog boxes, scrambling of text in these dialog boxes may occur. This anomaly is caused by the language kit extension, and is purely cosmetic. It will not affect the printing functionality. Using the Color StyleWriter 6500 printer With Application Programs * Avoiding Conflicts with Application Print Options Some applications provide their own printing options by adding check boxes, buttons, or fields to the Page Setup and Print dialog boxes. In the Color StyleWriter 6000 series printer software, these options are in the application panel located at the bottom of the pop-up menus in the Page Setup and Print dialog boxes. A conflict can occur when these options are also provided by the Color StyleWriter 6000 Series printer software. When the printer software and the application try to perform the same function, the result can be unpredictable. If an option is already handled through the Color StyleWriter 6000 Series printer software, it is usually best to use the printer software setting. Do not use the same setting in the application panel and the printer software at the same time. * Drag-and-Drop Printing Some applications do not support drag-and-drop printing. Drag-and-drop printing refers to dragging the icon of a document you want to print to the desktop icon of the printer you want to use. If you experience problems with drag-and-drop printing, open the application by double-clicking the document icon and then choose Print from the File menu. * Notes About Specific Applications The following list describes some special situations that you should be aware of when working with specific applications. (There may be other problems with these applications or with other applications not mentioned in this document.) If you have problems printing from a specific application, it may be a problem in that application. If you have problems, contact the publisher of the application. In some cases a newer, more compatible version of the software may be available. * In some applications, such as Microsoft Word 6.0.1, WordPerfect 3.5 and ClarisWorks 4.0, rotated text created within the program may print with jagged edges. For best results, create the rotated text in another application that supports rotated text and paste it in. Adobe Type Manager * When you install version 3.8.1 or later of Adobe Type Manager, some system fonts are removed from your system and placed in a folder called "De-installed Fonts1." If you later turn off ATM, drag all the fonts in the "De-installed Fonts1" folder back into the Fonts folder inside the System Folder to prevent characters with jagged edges. * If you get incorrect output when you try to print Adobe Type 1 fonts or Multiple Master fonts at large font sizes, try using a TrueType font instead. Adobe Illustrator 6.0.1 * Unless you have at least 15-20 MB of free disk space on your startup disk, you will see a "disk is full" error message when you try to print. The more complex the document, the more space you need. Adobe Persuasion 4.0 * To see the Color StyleWriter 6000 Series Page Setup dialog box, click on the Setup button in the Persuasion dialog box that comes up when you select Page Setup from the File menu. To select Slides, Handouts, Notes or Outline for printing, please use the check boxes in the Persuasion application panel at the bottom of the pop-up menu in the Print dialog box. Adobe PageMaker 6.5 * To see the Color StyleWriter 6000 Series Page Setup and Print dialog boxes, click the Setup button in PageMaker's Print dialog box. * When printing rotated PICT or EPS images, be sure background printing is turned on in the Background Panel in the Print Dialog box. If you must print in the foreground, rotate the image in another application, then import it into PageMaker in the orientation in which you plan to print it. CorelDraw 6.0 * For best results when using the tent card, side-fold card or top-fold card do not set the height to less than 11 inches. * CorelDraw does not support the tiled page option under "Corel Print Options" for QuickDraw printers. DeltaGraph Pro 3.5 * When printing charts, choose DeltaGraph Pro from the pop-up in the Print dialog box and click the "Print Using: QuickDraw" button. FrameMaker 5.1.1 * Rotated text in large point sizes will print as a gray box. For best results, break up the text blocks into smaller pieces or individual characters. * Do not mix portrait and landscape pages in the same document. MacDraw II 1.1 v2 * To print in color, be sure to pull down the File menu, choose Print Options, and click Print Color Patterns. Microsoft Excel 4.0 * To print in color, choose Microsoft Excel from the pop-up menu in the Print dialog box and click Print Using Color. Microsoft Excel 5.0 * If colored cell borders drop out when printing, try using yellow or brown or use the line tool in the Drawing tools palette. * When you choose the Page Setup command, you get Excel's own version of the Page Setup dialog box. Click the Options button to see the version of the dialog box with the special Color StyleWriter 6000 Series options. Microsoft Fine Artist 1.1 * For best results, print in the foreground. Microsoft Project 4.0 * The application doesn't support printing to a Color StyleWriter 6500 printer from a Mac OS computer with a 68020, 68030 or 68040 processor. Microsoft Word 6.0.1 * In Microsoft Word 6.0.1,when you cancel a print request while it is spooling, part or all of the document will print anyway. To prevent the document from printing, select your Desktop Printer icon and choose Stop Print Queue from the Printing menu. Double-click the Desktop Printer to open it, select the print request, and then delete it by clicking the Trash button. * For best results when printing envelopes, in Page Setup select the correct envelope size from the Paper Size pop-up and select landscape orientation. Pull down the View menu and select Page Layout, so you can see directly where text will be placed on the envelope. Do not use the Envelopes and Labels feature from Word's Tools menu, as it does not work properly with the Color StyleWriter 6500. Ofoto 2.0.2 * For best results, make a custom calibration for the Color StyleWriter 6500 and click the Custom Profile button. Follow the directions in your OneScanner User's Manual for making a custom calibration. Print Shop Deluxe 1.1.2 * For best results, do not print at less than 100% scaling. Ultimate Payroll 9.0 * If you experience problems while printing to a networked printer, try printing to a directly connected printer. WordPerfect 3.5 * For best results when printing envelopes, in Page Setup select the correct envelope size from the Paper Size pop-up and select landscape orientation. Enter your text and print. Do not use the Print Envelope feature under the File menu as it does not work properly with the Color StyleWriter 6500. (c)1997 Apple Computer, Inc. All rights reserved.
